2013 Golden Globes: Jodie Foster’s “Non-Coming-Out” Speech Is…Confusing?

The 2013 Golden Globes award ceremony honored Jodie Foster with the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by ‘Iron Man‘ star Robert Downey Jr., and what ensued was probably the strangest/longest “non-coming-out” speech of all-time.

Jodie Foster’s sexual orientation has long been Hollywood’s not-so-best kept secret, but if anyone was doubting the fact that she’s gay (Mel Gibson, we’re referring to you ’cause you seemed to look the most confused out of everyone), you shouldn’t be anymore.

“While I’m here being all confessional,” she began, “I just have the sudden urge to say something I’ve never been able to say in public. A declaration that I’m a little nervous about. Not quite as nervous as my publicist, huh, Jennifer? But uh, you know, I’m just going to put it out there. Loud and proud. I’m going to need your support. I am — single.”

While simultaneously cursing (or rather presumed cursing due to the long bleeped silence we all at home experienced) to coming out a “thousand years ago” to bringing up the topic of privacy, Jodie Foster seemed to start making a “coming out” announcement but ended up sort of dancing around the subject.

However, she then gave a big shout-out to Cydney Bernard, her “ex-partner in love, [her] righteous soul sister in life,” with whom she raised her two sons and split back in 2008. So without actually saying, “Yeah, I’m gay,” she pretty much did, giving the much-talked-about 2013 Golden Globes moment the title of “non-coming-out speech.”

Also confusing to the viewers at home (at least the ones on Twitter) was the issue of retirement — although it may have sounded like she was bowing out from acting after a long career, she stated backstage after her speech, “I could never stop acting. You’d have to drag me behind a team of horses. … I’d like to be directing tomorrow. I’m more into it than I’ve ever been.”
