Governor Paul LePage has ordered that all flags be flown at half staff until Sunday at all Maine National Guard facilities in honor of Lt. Col. Michael Backus.  Backus who was only 44 years old died this past Monday while performing his duties at Camp Keyes in Augusta.  He was the operations branch chief for the deputy chief of staff. He was well respected by his fellow guardsmen and served in a number of capacities during his 22 year career.  His death took people by surprise, mentioning that he was very active and a "picture of health".

We thank Lt. Col. Michael Backus for his service to our state and country, and pass along our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.
