Think that you have what it takes to swim the 3.1 miles from the shore of Penobscot Bay out to Islesboro?  Saturday, August 29th will be a good day to find out!

The Islesboro Crossing For Lifeflight, one of the longest swims in New England will depart Point Lookout in Lincolnville on Saturday, August 29th, at 7am.  It's a fundraiser for a very important service here in Maine, Lifeflight.

Each year, Lifeflight of Maine transports hundreds of critical patients in medical emergencies to the help that they need. Chances are you've seen this ever important helicopter leaving and then returning to Eastern Maine Medical Center.  It provides a very important service and relies heavily on funding from various individuals, organizations and groups.

This year, the pledged money collected by swimmers  will go toward purchasing an Infant Isolette for Lifeflight's new aircraft.  It will to safely transport newborns to their needed specialized care facility.

The Islesboro Crossing For Lifeflight is just one of the events scheduled that you can help!

This year's swim begins with a "mandatory swimmer escort meeting on Friday, August 28,  at 7 pm.  An escort for your swim is required.  He or she will follow beside you closely on either a paddleboard or in a kayak.  You will have to provide your own escort.

The swim is a 5k (3.1 miles), and begins at 7am the following morning. Parking will be at Point Lookout in Lincolnville, with shuttle service to the starting line.  The Lincolnville ferry will be available to return swimmers to the Lincolnville Beach parking lot. Shuttle service again will be available from ferry terminal to Point Lookout.

The registration fee for the swim is $125.  Have a bunch of folks sponsor you!!  It's for a good cause!  You are encouraged to collect even more!

The course is described as "challenging" and will be in open waters.  A wetsuit is encouraged.  The water temperature in deeper waters will be about 55 degrees.
