These days with Social Security in question half the time and the American economy allowing inflation to have its way wit us many retirees have decided to take the funds they do have and head for places that your dollar will go further.  OK, the beaches aren't bad either. AARP’s webpage say that they investigated the overseas retirement scene, looking for warm and sunny, attractively affordable locales with good-to-excellent health care that are hospitable to Americans of retirement age.

  • Argentina: Dance the tango and sip Malbec in Buenos Aires, the "Paris of South America."  Resident of Buenos Aires say $2,000 a month should provide a nice standard of living.
  • Belize:  A Central American paradise that offers beaches, beauty and a fast track to residency status. In Corozal you can live comfortably on $18,000 a year.
  • Costa Rica: The Central Valley's outlying towns boast temperate, dry days, natural beauty—and so much more.  Retirees report living comfortably on $2,000 a month.
  • France:  Arts and culture, medieval towns and castles attract retirees to the Mediterranean region of Languedoc-Roussillon.  Not cheap, but a comfortably frugal life can be had for $30,000 a year.
  • Italy : Find vineyards, snow-capped mountains and gorgeous Adriatic Coast beaches in Le Marche. A comfortable life can be had on $20,000 to $25,000 a year.
  • Mexico:  First-class urban amenities and charming palm-fringed villages draw retirees to the Puerto Vallarta region. According to one recent survey, almost half of U.S. expats on the Pacific Coast report living “comfortably” on less than $1,000 a month.
  • Nicaragua: The dollar goes a long way in Granada—and the breathtakingly beautiful landscape doesn't hurt either. A comfortable living can be had on $18,000 a year.
  • Panama: The mountain village of Boquete offers something close to heaven for American retirees. One can live comfortably on $20,000 a year.
  • Portugal: Fall through a crack in time and into the good life in casual Cascais.  A comfortable life can be had on $25,000 a year; frugal comfort on $20,000 a year.
  • Spain: Along the beautiful Costa del Sol, the savvy retiree can find quaint villages and quiet beaches. Though it depends on the town (Marbella is very pricey), expats report they can get by on $20,000 a year frugally, $25,000 a year comfortably.
