Metal license plates may soon be a thing of the past. South Carolina is considering trying out new digital plates.The plates would look like a standard plate but can blink messages. The state could have the plate blink 'Stolen' in a theft situation, 'Uninsured' or 'Suspended.'

The plates could save folks trips to the DMV by updating registrations electronically. The plates will lower insurance costs too. The idea is if less uninsured people are on the road getting into accidents, the premiums for others can drop.

I give it a few months till we see blinking Viagra ads on the plates...
