A man from the town of Stockholm was killed instantly when his snowmobile ran into some trees in New Sweden.

Game wardens responded at around 9:00 Saturday night to a report of a serious snowmobile crash on Maine's Interconnecting Trail System (ITS) 83, near the East Road Intersection. Officials say 32-year-old John Anderson was northbound from Caribou when his machine drifted to the left side of the groomed trail and collided with several trees. Both he and the sled came to rest in the trail about 200 feet beyond the impact location. Anderson was killed instantly.

His body was discovered by Reighel Waugh of Caribou. The two had been out snowmobiling all day Saturday and were making a northwesterly loop, returning to her residence on the Bog Road in Caribou.

Officials say speed appears to have been a factor in the crash. The Maine Warden Service was assisted by State Police and members of Caribou Fire and Ambulance.

This is Maine's second snowmobile fatality of the season, in as many weeks. On January 24th, 61-year-old Robert Milhomme of Saint George died from head injuries sustained from a snowmobile crash that happened on a plowed private way in South Thomaston. Milhomme was not wearing a helmet.
