Man Charged With Assaulting Officer

A man faces charges after he allegedly punched a Bangor police officer several times in the head during an incident in Pickering Square Tuesday afternoon.

Bret Libby, 22, of Bangor allegedly was part of a group that began badgering officers as they attempted to take another person into custody shortly after 2 p.m.

Libby was arrested when he attempted to block an officer from reaching a woman, 23-year-old Mariah Lamb, who allegedly tried to block the officer from reaching the suspect.

The officer told Lamb she was under arrest and Libby quickly stepped in between them, according to a news release. The officer tried to push Libby aside but Libby began attacking the officer, police said.

After Libby punched the officer in the head and face several times, the officer forced Libby to the ground where he and another officer worked to gain control of him. Libby was taken into custody shortly thereafter. Other responding officers took Lamb into custody. Both were taken to the Penobscot County Jail.

Lamb has been charged with two misdemeanors, disorderly conduct and refusing to submit to arrest.

Libby has been charged with felony assault on an officer, and misdemeanors obstructing government administration, refusing to submit to arrest class and disorderly conduct. He was released on bail.

Police are increasing their enforcement efforts in Pickering Square for the time being.
