Police say an 18-year-old transient from the Bath area was arrested Monday for possessing a stolen firearm, and he may face additional charges, including theft of a motor vehicle.

Police in Bath on Monday received a report of a stolen vehicle from 508 Middle Street in Bath, according to a Tuesday news release from the Bath Police Department. The vehicle was recovered later that day in a cemetery off Oak Grove Avenue. As investigators examined the car and surrounding area for evidence, they located a spent shell casing and a cartridge from a .380 caliber handgun.

Later that day, Bath police took a report of a stolen firearm from an unlocked car at 667 Middle Street. That firearm was a .380 caliber handgun. The owner of the firearm reported to officers that the gun was loaded when it was taken.

Bath police received investigative information that led them to Damon Peacock, an 18-year-old transient from the Bath area, the release said. They further learned that Peacock was at a friend’s residence at 472 Chops Cross Road in Woolwich. Bath police officer Garrett Olson and Sagadahoc County deputy Matthew Shiers went to the residence to investigate. Officer Olson located Peacock there and found the stolen weapon on him, police said.

Peacock was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property, a class B felony. Peacock was on bail for a Bath Police Department arrest on Dec. 21 that involved charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, failing to stop and operating without a license.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and it is likely that Peacock will receive additional charges, including theft of property from a motor vehicle and theft of a motor vehicle.

Peacock’s bail was revoked on the previous charges, and no bail was allowed on the current charges. He was taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail. Peacock was given an arraignment date of March 7.
