A tractor-trailer driver from Virginia faces charges after he drove several miles along the Maine Turnpike last night in the wrong lane, according to police.

Michael Crews, 49, from Hurt, Virginia, was charged with driving to endanger after police were able to stop his truck in Saco after it collided with the rear of a cruiser. The big rig was stopped after troopers had to take evasion action to avoid a head on collision with the truck, according to police.

Police responded to the scene after receiving a number of calls from motorists about 9:30 p.m. of a driver with traveling the wrong way with its lights off.

Crews was taken to Southern Maine Medical Center in Saco for evaluation.

The trailer portion of the truck, which was empty, is registered to Blue Diamond Transportation from Presque Isle.

Police believe Crews got on the wrong lane from the Kennebunk service plaza, driving north in the southbound lane.

There was minor damage to the cruiser and no injuries to the responding troopers.
