They're most noticeable on airplanes and in mini-fridge-bars in hotel rooms.  They're apparently becoming more noticeable on the sides of Maine's road too.

Nips, or liquor bottles with volumes of less than 50 milliliters, have become so noticeable to one State Representative and his constituents that he has submitted a bill to add them to Maine's returnable bottle program.

The returnable bottle program currently applies to bottles with volumes greater than 50 milliliters.

“Most people have seen the small bottles of LTD and Fireball accumulating at the edges of streets and around storm drains,” said Martin Grohman, D-Biddeford, in a recent press release. “It's clear we need to do something about it, and Maine's bottle deposit has been proven to reduce litter. We have the chance to strengthen it further.”

Legislators can submit bills now that the next Legislature will take into consideration beginning in December.
