The Hostess Twinkie officially turns 88 today, and that well-documented Maine Twinkie at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill turns 42.  Kind of looks like it did 42 years ago.

In 1976, now retired chemistry teacher Roger Bennatti was asked about the shelf life of a Twinkie, and promptly placed an unwrapped one by the chalkboard.  When Mr. Bennatti  retired in 2004, he left the Twinkie with the Dean Of Students, Libby Rosemeier, who happened to have been in his class back in 1976.  Amazing.

This 42 year-old Twinkie doesn't look all that appetizing, but we're happy that it's located here in Maine and maybe just maybe, the oldest one in existence on the planet.

Twinkies were invented back in 930 by Jimmy Dewar, a man who worked at a bakery in Chicago, who knew of a company called the Twinkle Toe Shoe Company.
