The Warden Service says the body of a missing 9-year-old swimmer was located Saturday morning. The girl had been swimming with several other people in the Mattawamkeag River.

According to the BDN, the search began around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. The girl had been swimming in Sleugundy Heater Gorge, which is about a mile and a half from Mattawamkeag Wilderness Campground and Park. A group of about seven people, mostly adults, were enjoying the river Friday afternoon. But when the 9-year-old and an adult tried to swim across the river to get to cliffs on the other side, she was swept away by the current.

Wardens told WABI-TV that the river currents are very strong right now, especially after the strong rains received earlier this week. There's no word on the child's identity, only that she and her mother and two siblings lived in the town of Winn.
