On the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings, a powerful and inspirational video is demonstrating the American spirit. It pays tribute to Boston, “a city built by rebels.”
It was on April 15th, 2013 that two pressure cooker bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. 3 people were killed, an estimated 264 others were injured.
On April 18th, the FBI took over the investigation and released pictures of the suspects, Chechan brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarneav. Shortly thereafter, gunfire rang out at MIT, an MIT police officer was killed, an MBTA police officer was injured, and suspect Tamerlan was shot to death.
On April 19th, Boston looked like a ghost town as police ordered the public to shelter in place. A massive manhunt ensued as a nation watched, finally ending when a Watertown resident spotted an injured Dzhokhar Tsarneav hiding in a boat on their property. He was taken into custody and charged with Use of a Weapon of Mass Destruction and Malicious Destruction of Property Resulting in Death. He has pleaded not guilty to 30 counts.
The country mourned a year ago and, today, will mourn again as we remember the senseless loss of lives and the trauma inflicted on everyone involved that day.
But on April 21st, the runners will take to the city streets again. To compete. To endure. To pay honor to the fallen. And to show the terrorists they cannot win.
