Both the Mayor of Boston and the Bruins honor a hockey player who turned an injury into a life of helping others.

On Oct. 20, 1995 Travis Roy was just 11 seconds into his freshman debut with the Boston University Terriers when his life changed forever. He took a hit into the boards which broke his fourth vertebrae, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down.

Ever since his accident Roy has dedicated his life to helping people with spinal cord injuries as an activist and spokesman.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh honored Roy at Agganis Arena on Tuesday night calling for October 20th to be known as 'Travis Roy Day.' The Boston Bruins also showed support by signing Roy to a 'one-day contract.' That contract was worth $50,000 which was donated to his Travis Roy Foundation. Roy also dropped the puck for the B's, Lightning game earlier this week.
