Bruce Springsteen’s ‘High Hopes’ Leaks Two Weeks Early

Bruce Springsteen fans temporarily got a bit of an extended Christmas yesterday (Dec. 28) when his upcoming album, ‘High Hopes,’ was made available for download — accidentally perhaps — from Amazon’s mobile site. The scheduled release date is Jan. 14, 2014.

Although Amazon fixed the problem relatively quickly, it was still long enough for word to spread via social media. Perhaps more damaging to the album’s commercial chances, the availability enabled people to upload the mp3s and share it with friends. Billboard says that it is not known if the leak was intentional.

‘High Hopes’ is mostly a collection of covers and unreleased songs from the past decade. In a departure from Springsteen’s usual method of working, he recorded much of it with the E Street Band while touring Australia last spring, the first time he had ever booked studio time while on the road. Guitarist Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, who has frequently joined Springsteen over the years, is featured on eight of the disc’s 12 songs.

In late-January, Springsteen will embark on a five-week tour of the Southern Hemisphere, hitting South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Although nothing has been booked yet, he is looking to tour the U.S. in 2014, with an emphasis on playing markets that he missed on the ‘Wrecking Ball’ tour, such as Texas and Florida.
