Want to buy the original manuscript with the lyrics to American Pie?  You'll probably have to come up with about $1.5 million!

Don McLean, who wrote one of the most popular songs of all time, and a Camden, Maine, resident, is putting the sixteen pages of original handwritten lyrics to the 1971 song up for bid.

"My wife and children don't seem to have the knack for making money, and I seem to have that," McLean told Bloomberg.

The sing-a-long eight minute and twenty second in length long tune stayed on top of the pop charts for four weeks in 1972.  It was on the American Pie album that McLean released in 1971.

The song will be auctioned by Christie's in New York, and the asking price is at least $1 million.

Why has it lasted so long?  "Relevance is a hard thing to predict" said McLean.  He also said that he will not attend the auction, and "couldn't care less" as to who will place the winning bid.

McLean will leave his home in Maine shortly for a tour in Britain, Ireland and then the U.S.
