Bangor is exploring the idea of hosting the first responders Olympic Games.

Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau is hoping to bring the Can-Am Police-Fire Games to Bangor and Orono. The event brings first responders and their families from all over the world together for 10 days of competition. The Games consist of over 40 events, from pistol shooting, golf, softball and the 'Toughest Firefighter Alive.'

The Can-Am Police-Fire Games occur every even year. This year, York, Pennsylvania played host. About $1 million was pumped into the local economy for the week long event. The Games typically draw 550-700 participants.

The Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau has until January to submit a letter to the Can-Am Police-Fire Games. They would then send final proposal by April, 2015.

Bangor CVB first has to prove it can secure the sponsors needed to host the event. In addition they have to create a detailed budget and prove the area has facilities to host large sporting events and to house competitors, judges and organizers.

Bangor CVB is offering the month of June to the Games. That month should have less conflicts with summer concerts, festivals and events that fill up area hotel space. If June is a no go, Bangor will likely drop its pursuit to host.

The host city is picked five years in advance. Thunder Bay, Ontario will host in 2016, followed by Hampton Roads, Virginia in 2018.
