Celebrating His Service to Maine and Honoring the Life of Major Gregory Sanborn

News Photo-Major Gregory Sanborn-Maine Warden Service

People will gather today and Monday to remember and celebrate a friend, son, brother, husband, father, colleague, and true champion of the Maine outdoors.

At the age of 47, Major Sanborn lost his battle against a rare form of cancer on February 5th.

Gregory Sanborn was born in Bridgton, Maine in 1965 and graduated from Fryeburgh Academy in 1984. After earning his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Maine, Sanborn followed his life-long dream of becoming a Game Warden and went on to graduate from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy and Warden school in 1990.

Sanborn served the state honorably from Kittery to Calais, and points in between, and was promoted to Major in 2004 to become second in command of the Maine Warden Service. Warden Lt. Pat Dorian spoke of Sandborn’s commitment and integrity.

“Gregg had extraordinary common sense and had a gift for reading a person’s body language. He had a keen sense of fairness and he believed in doing what was right for the entire agency. He could look at the big picture and understand how it would impact the Maine Warden Service,” said Lt. Dorian.

Sanborn’s efforts were instrumental in improving the agency’s equipment and technological capabilities.

Visiting hours will be held today from 4-6pm and 7-9pm at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro and a celebration of life service is set for 11am Monday.

Family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations me made to the Maine Warden Service Relief Association’s Scholarship Fund, 284 State Street, #41SHS, Augusta, Maine, 04333-0041.

Governor Paul LePage has requested flags be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset Monday in Freyburg, Augusta and Vassalboro in Honor of Major Gregory Sanborn.
