Big changes are in store concerning the current fireworks law for residents in the City of Ellsworth.

Meetings were held recently where officials and department heads from the City listened to concerns from folks who were pretty much tired of hearing the unanticipated loud bangs every night of the week.  People complained that the nearby fireworks disrupted their solitude, scared their animals and created a fire hazard.  Apparently City officials listened.

A new rule that would out and out banned all fireworks within the MDOT Urban Compact area, where city residents live in close quarters, could take effect during the next City Council meeting scheduled for Monday, December 15th, at 7 p.m.

Outside of the MDOT Urban Compact area, fireworks use would be permitted on Friday and Saturday nights between 6 and 10 only, with extended hours around New Year's and the Fourth of July.

Before adopting the new fireworks rule, members of the City Council are soliciting opinions and comments.  You can email those to the City Manager, Michelle Beal, at mbeal@ellsworthmaine.gov or by calling 667-6616.

Maine law allows the use of fireworks every day between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., although may towns and cities have adopted their own set of rules.
