San Andreas, the recent action/thriller starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson centers around a massive California earthquake, but, could a quake of that magnitude happen here in Maine?

The answer to that is no, according to the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.

In a recent press release, MDAC&F said, "Maine is geologically old, and while it does have a moderate level of widespread earthquake activity, it does not have active faults like the San Andreas. In fact, the two magnitude 9 earthquakes that happen in the movie are not even possible on the real San Andreas fault in California."

So I guess we don't have to worry about that, we can tell The Rock to stay home.  Although, it seems that each and every Mainer can re-call an instance where they've experienced the earth moving here in the Pine Tree State.  We have all heard the loud "bang" of a quake, we have heard the house creak only to learn the next day that it was a small earthquake, and we have seen water moving within a glass, on it's own.

The press release goes on to say: "However, we were reminded in August 2011 by the magnitude 5.8 Mineral, Virginia, earthquake that our region can experience damaging earthquakes, just not of the magnitude and frequency expected in California."

More information on earthquakes in Maine can be found at the Maine Geological Survey website.  The site will even show you a listing of recent earthquakes here in Maine, the last one happening on May 22nd, near the Dixfield-Jay town line, with a magnitude of 2.4.  Think that you felt a quake?  You can report it at the site too.

Are you concerned enough now to prepare for an earthquake here in Maine? The Maine Emergency Management Agency has prepared a nifty guide that you and your family can follow.

But, remember, when all looks lost, The Rock may come swooping down and scoop your ass up to safety!
