Can The ‘Dell Dude’ Come Back and Save the Computer Giant?

A decade ago, Dell was riding high. They sold more computers than any other company in the world, and some of their success could be attributed to an ad campaign featuring a character affectionately (or not so affectionately) known as the “Dell Dude.”

Actor Ben Curtis played “Steven,” a wisecracking, slacker type who would sing the virtues Dell’s products and then drop his catchphrase of ”Dude, you’re getting a Dell.”

The ad campaign began in 2000 and ended in 2003, not long after Curtis was busted for buying marijuana in New York City.

Since then, Dell’s fortunes have declined. They have fallen to third in global PC sales and the company lost almost a third of its overall value this year. To raise funding, founder Michael Dell is planning on taking Dell private.

However, Ben Curtis has his own idea about what can reverse Dell’s slide.

“I think they’re making a huge mistake and simply need to bring back the Dell Dude!” Curtis wrote in an email to Bloomberg blogger Mark Milian. “That’s it. That’s all they need to do. If they brought me back, their sales, stock and media presence would skyrocket. That is by FAR the smartest move they could make.”

What do you think? Would a return of the Dell Dude convince you to ditch your Apple? Watch him work his charms in a retro spot below.
