Discount at Farmers’ Markets Offered to Furloughed Federal Employees

Food and Medicine of Brewer is helping furloughed government workers provide food for their families. The temporary program will offer discounts at three area Farmers' Markets, for the duration of the government shutdown.

Food and Medicine is a non-profit that regularly helps folks receiving SNAP benefits, formerly known as food stamps, get a discount at area Farmers’ markets. Now, federal workers and their families affected by the government shutdown can receive the same help.

The offer includes a 50% discount on the first $40 in purchases customers make at any of three Farmer’s markets...on Ohio Street in Bangor on Wednesdays, the Brewer Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, and the Bangor Farmers’ Market on Sundays in the parking lot across from the library.

Furloughed federal employees in need will have to bring a recent pay stub or ID from a federal facility, to be eligible for the same discount. They just need to take it to the information tent at each market before they begin to shop, so the discount can be applied.

Food and Medicine will offer the discount to federal workers until the end of the government shutdown. For more information, log onto Food and Medicine's website.
