Back in the sixties and seventies some musicians really took pride in their craft, including bass players. They were actually part of the music and provided much of the melody of the song, rather than just the backbone.

Bass players like Paul McCartney of the Beatles and John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin were really quite amazing,  But, someone who literally played the hell out of his bass guitar was The Who's John Entwistle, and today would have been his birthday.

John Entwistle died in a hotel room in Las Vegas, the night before the band's 2002 North American tour was to kick off.

John Lennon was born on this date in 1940, he would have been 73 years old today.  The lead singer of the Beatles and Paul McCartney's writing partner gave up the limelight for awhile back in the 1970s.  He returned to music in 1980 when his Double Fantasy album was released, only to be murder that December. Today, is also his son Sean's birthday, Sean is 38.

Sharon Osbourne is 61 today.  Man, you have to give this rock n roll lady a lot of credit.  Why?  Just one word:  Ozzy.

Jackson Browne is 65 today.  Browne broke onto the scene with the song Doctor My Eyes and reached his height with the Running On Empty album!  Browne was co-writer of the Eagles song Take It Easy, and dated actress Daryl Hannah back in 1988.  An activist for the environment, he still performs and has a show on Sunday October 20th in Glendale, CA.
