Three early rock pioneers would play for the last time, CBS TV apologized for a wardrobe malfunction, Yoko divorced her husband for John, and Phil Collins passed the audition.

Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper all appeared on this night at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, as part of the Winter Dance Party Tour.  The three would board a small plane for Fargo, North Dakota, early the next morning.

It was a cold and snowy night, and unfortunately the plane would crash into a field just a short distance from where it took off.  It was the so-called day the music died, although it really didn't, in part thanks to Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper.

On this day in 1969, Yoko Ono would divorce her husband.  Two months later she would marry John Lennon.  John had met Yoko for the first time in 1966.

It was this day in 1976 that Genesis released A Trick Of The Tail, their seventh album, and the first since the departure of Peter Gabriel, their lead vocalist.  The band would audition over four hundred lead singers for the gig.  While doing so they noticed Phil Collins, their drummer, teaching the candidates how to sing the songs.  After a terrible waste of time, Phil ended up being the band's lead vocalist. Genesis are the I-95 Band Of The Day!

He had just been released on bail for the murder of his girlfriend, but it didn't take Sid Vicious long to die.  The bass player for the Sex Pistols would die from a heroin overdose on this night in 1979.

On this day in 1985 Foreigner had the #1 song on the charts with I Want To Know What Love Is.  Mick Jones, the guitarist for the band wrote the song.  When the band is on the road they'll usually choose a local high school choir to join them onstage to perform the song. The Greater Bangor New Renaissance Singers and the chorus from Deering High School in Portland joined the the band here in Maine during two recent performances.

Country singer Willie Nelson owed the I.R.S. over $16 million, and it was on this day in 1993 that he coughed up $9 million of it.  He had spent the rest on bad weed.

It was this day in 2004 that the suits at CBS TV apologized for the Super Bowl halftime show episode in which Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson's breast to a national audience.  The network called it a wardrobe malfunction after Justin Timiberlake called it a mistake. CBS had received hundreds of complaints from folks who didn't like exposed breasts and were probably bottle fed.

Graham Nash was born on this day in 1942.  Graham was a member of The Hollies before teaming up with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Neil Young to form CSN&Y.

She didn't play music, but she was music to our eyes.  Farrah Fawcett would have been 69 today. The gorgeous actress and cover girl passed away of cancer in 2009.
