This date in 1965 saw the release of the second movie by the Beatles!

Screaming girls everywhere congregated in movie theaters to watch the Fab Four take on an evil cult in Help, a comedy adventure that centered around a ring on Ringo's finger.  The movie was inspired by Duck Soup, a filmed that starred the Marx Brothers.

In 1967, the Doors hit #1 with Light My Fire, it was their first #1 song. Watch the video of Jim Morrison (The Lizard King) singing the song.  The Doors lead vocalist really raised the bar, a plateau that all other of rocks lead vocalists would try to reach.  One year later, Jose Feliciano, the blind guitarist, would chart the song at #3.

The first recording session for Hey Jude took place on this date in 1968.  Paul McCartney took inspiration from John Lennon's son Julian to write the song. It was originally titled Hey Jules. The song was seven minutes in length, providing DJs across the country with plenty of time to relieve themselves.

In 1974 Mamas And The Papas singer Cass Elliot  died.  No, she didn't choke on a ham sandwich which was widely thought.  The hefty Cass had just finished up two weeks of performing solo concerts in London, and had been spending the night at Harry Nilsson's vacant and rented apartment.  Cass, 32, had a heart attack and passed away in her sleep.  Initially, investigators found half eaten food on the table and thought that it may have had something to do with her death, but an autopsy showed nothing in her wind tunnel.  Four years later, Keith Moon would die in the same apartment.  Spooky.
