It was on this date in 1965 while at Carnegie Hall in New York City Bob Dylan introduced his new touring band, they would later become an American music institution.

In between songs Dylan introduced organist Garth Hudson, bassist Rick Danko, pianist Richard Manual and drummer Levon Helm. Later, Robbie Robertson would join and they would  become known simply as The Band.   The Band would go on to record such American classics as Up On Cripple Creek and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down!

In 1966, Jimi Hendrix made his England debut when he played with Eric Clapton and Cream at the London Polytechnic,  Sadly, it was on this date in 1970 that Hendrix was buried in Seattle after dying two weeks prior on English soil.

A band called Meco hit #1 on this date in 1977 with a disco version of the theme from Star Wars.  Yes, that's what life was like back in the seventies, very hairy people and disco versions of corny ass music.

In 1981, Martin Chambers who plays drums for the Pretenders had a man fit and put his hand through a window, cutting tendons and arteries, and just generally making a bloody mess.  The Pretenders had to cancel the remainder of their U.S. tour because no one in the band wanted to be splattered by their drummer's blood.

John Cougar, yes, he was still being called "Cougar," hit #1 on the album chart with American Fool, his fifth album.  It featured the little ditty Jack & Diane which instantly became a big hit on MTV, they we're playing videos back then.  John Mellencamp is the I-95 Artist of the Day.  John Cougar is pissed, because we didn't select him.

Bon Jovi scored a #1 album on this day in 1988 with New Jersey.  It produced five top ten singles, the most top ten hits to date for a hard rock album!  Of course most by now are forgettable, as are the band's former hairstyles.
