On this date in 1964, a little known band named the High Numbers received a letter from EMI Records asking for original material following an audition.  Who the hell were the High Numbers?

The Who, that's Who.  And apparently they past the audition.

A song that took 6 weeks to record at four different studios made it's way onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart on this date in 1966.  By the time it was finished everyone involved never wanted to hear it ever again.  The recording engineer, that poor bastard, even said that the first take sounded like the last.  Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys, the Brian Wilson masterpiece, would go all the way to #1.  Bet no one was complaining then.

This date in 1969 saw the release of the second album by Led Zeppelin, appropriately named Led Zeppelin II.  It got the band onto the pop charts too, with the song Whole Lotta Love, which contained the line, "Shake for me girl, I wanna be your back door man.  Keep it coolin' baby." Yes, I'd say that one line right there pretty much sums up the feeling of rock n' roll by a long-shot.

On this date in 200, English pop singer George Michael purchased the Steinway piano that John Lennon used while writing Imagine. Michael said at the time, "I know that when my fingers touch the keys of that Steinway, I will feel truly blessed."  The Steinway now has sticky keys.

In 2005 Waterloo by Abba was voted the best song in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest. Viewers in 31 countries across Europe voted.  Now who the hell wouldn't agree with that? Waterloo is bitchin'!

Born on this date in 1945, Leslie West, this fine looking vision of health and guitarist of Mountain really stood out with the song Mississippi Queen, played in garages everywhere on a Saturday night.
