Nope, he didn't die before he got old. A couple of his band mates may have, but he didn't.

It was on this date in 1965 that The Who released what Rolling Stone magazine would call the 11th Greatest Song Of All Time - My Generation!  The song exudes pure rock n' roll rebellion and contained the line "Hope I die before I get old." By the way, Daltry is now 71, and maybe that isn't "old" by today's standards after all.

In 1966 on this day ? And The Mysterians hit #1 with 96 Tears, one of the greatest party songs of all time.  At the time one of the great worldly questions was exactly who was the lead singer who called himself "?"  Eventually Rudy Martinez of Saginaw, Michigan, made himself known, and inhabitants of planet earth felt a whole lot safer.

Tragedy hit the South's greatest band ever on this date in 1971, as Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band was killed when he lost control of his Harley while trying to avoid a tractor-trailer on a street in Macon, Georgia. The Allman Brothers were known for their extensive jams as Duane and fellow guitarist Dickie Betts would trade off licks.  That's also Duane's sweet slide guitar sound that you hear on Layla, the Derek & The Dominoes classic!

Strangely, a year later, just three blocks away from where Duane Allman was killed, Berry Oakley, the band's bass player, would also die in a motorcycle accident.

On it's 491st week on the Billboard Hot Album Chart, Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd surpassed the previous record holder "Johnny's Greatest Hits" by Johnny Mathis, on this date in 1983. The Floyd album would finally fall off the chart 5 years later after spending 741 weeks there.  Meanwhile, Johnny Mathis, now 80,  is still very rich.

On this date in 2001, U2 would perform for the first time on David Letterman's program.

And on this date in 1990, the red headed fireball of terror known as Axel Rose was released on $10,000 bail after being arrested for hitting a neighbor over the head with a bottle.  According to the cops, the incident happened after the neighbor complained about loud music coming from Axel's house, which we find hard to believe. Screw the neighbors!  So today we give Guns N' Roses the honor of being the I-95 Band Of The Day!  Long live loud rock n' roll!  F'ing neighbors.  Oh, their daughter's hot?  Long live the neighbors!
