It was on this date in 1977 that the plane crashed, and three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd were killed.  Lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and his sister, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines were all killed in the crash which happened in Gillsburg, Mississippi.

The southern rock band has just released Street Survivors, their fifth album and most pop sounding.  The band was just five days into the tour that would have supported the album.

To this day Lynyrd Skynyrd still tours but with just one original member, Gary Rossington.  Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

Tom Petty is celebrating his 63rd birthday today. Born in Gainesville, Florida, Tom started the Heartbreakers in 1976. The band really hit their stride with the release of "Damn The Torpedoes" in 1979.
