Camden resident Don McLean has been fined $400 for speeding in a school zone in Rockport, which took place last September.

The 67-year-old "American Pie" singer had contested the ticket after police said he was driving his Chrysler at 43 miles per hour at a time when warning lights in the school zone were flashing. When the lights flash, the speed limit is reduced from 45 miles per hour to 15 miles per hour.

McLean had argued that the lights were not flashing when he drove through the zone. The police officer who wrote the summons said otherwise. The judge handling the case on Thursday reduced the fine from $516 to $400, which McLean promptly paid following his appearance in court.

Very rarely do cases like this make it to trial, it's even less common when the defendant hires an attorney for it, which McLean did.

Don McLean's song "American Pie" was the number one song of 1972.
