A man from Bath is facing charges after police say he allegedly hit a pedestrian intentionally after the two had exchanged words.

Bath Police Lieutenant Robert Savary said in a press release that the victim was walking to work at Bath Iron Works just before 4:30 Wednesday morning when he was hit on Richardson Street. Now, 22-year-old James Black of Bath is charged with Elevated Aggravated Assault.

The victim told police that the driver had made some offensive comments toward him and then words were exchanged between the two men. The confrontation appeared to be over as the vehicle drove off, but it returned moments later and drove directly at him, striking him as he walked along the side of the road. The collision propelled the victim completely over the car, causing him to hit the windshield, roof, and rear of the vehicle in the process. The driver then fled the scene, leaving the victim in the road with serious injuries.

Police say the victim continued to walk about a half mile to work, despite his significant injuries, where he called and reported the incident. Bath Ambulance responded with police and transported the victim to Mid Coast Emergency Room for treatment.

An investigation, that included interviews with people in the immediate area, led officers to locate the vehicle in a wooded area in Phippsburg belonging to Black's family. He was located at his home in Bath and was taken into custody, charged with elevated aggravated assault and violation of conditions of release. Black was on bail for a recent OUI arrest by Bath Police.

The victim sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries, to include broken bones in his head and shoulder.

Black remains in custody with no bail allowed.
