Once the main link between Prospect and Verona Island, the Waldo-Hancock Bridge will be demolished beginning Nov. 1.

Maine's first suspension bridge has sat unused in the shadow of its gleaming successor since the opening of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge in 2006. Built in 1931, the green rusting span has become an eyesore and contractors are expected to work into the winter, lowering sections of the roadway to barges below for removal.

Locals are being invited to bring lawn chairs and watch the dismantling process.
