One woman is dead and another in critical condition after a fire at an elderly apartment complex in Oxford.

The State Fire Marshall's Office says the fire broke out at Oxford Meadows at about 2 o'clock Saturday morning, starting in a common area and spreading thick smoke throughout the building. More than a dozen residents of the complex on Route 26 were treated for smoke inhalation. All the residents were taken to a nearby high school after being evacuated from their apartments.

A team of fire marshals will spend today trying to determine the cause of the fire. The names of the victims will be released after their families have been notified.
