The Flaming Lips Cover the Beatles’ ‘All You Need Is Love’

Although they have a deserved reputation as one of indie rock’s weirdest bands, the Flaming Lips have a classic rock heart. Literally. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, they have released a limited edition 15-song mix, ‘Songs of Love,’ which closes with a cover of the Beatles‘ ‘All You Need Is Love.’

The Flaming Lips recorded the cover with two members of neo-folk act Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes, who had that song ‘Home’ that was on seemingly every other commercial and movie trailer a few years back.

But rather than press the music onto vinyl or a compact disc, Pitchfork reports that the band is selling it as a USB stick. And, since it wouldn’t be a Flaming Lips release if there wasn’t a touch of surrealism attached, they have teamed up with Texas-based confectioners Dude, Sweet Chocolate to include it buried in some chocolate hearts.

The chocolate used for this honor is described as “72% South American dark chocolate studded with hazelnut mini whoppers and waffle cone crunch.” It should be perfect for when you get the munchies while listening to ‘Songs of Love.’ Frontman Wayne Coyne uploaded a picture of himself eating the heart to his Instagram account.

This is at least the second time the Flaming Lips have released a Beatles cover. In Nov. 2011, they recorded ‘Revolution’ entirely on iPads as a tribute to the late Apple founder Steve Jobs (ironic given the now-settled decades-long feud between the computer company and the rock legends). They’ve also famously covered Pink Floyd‘s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ in concert and on vinyl and, most recently, gave the same treatment to King Crimson‘s ‘In the Court of the Crimson King.’
