Flick Chick here once again in the pursuit of truth, justice and keeping you from spending your hard earned money on movies that don’t make the grade! Over the weekend I put on my more gritty black and white with a splash of color self and headed into the Bangor Mall Cinemas to see  'Sin City: A Dame To Kill For'.

This movie runs just under 2 hours, is an action, crime, thriller and is Rated R for strong brutal stylized violence throughout, sexual content, nudity, and brief drug use
This film has a great cast Starring: Rosario Dawson, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Josh Brolin, Christopher Meloni, Stacy Keach, and the list goes on, even Lady Gaga pops up.

Summary:

Based on a graphic novel, one of seven, this film has a very stylized look and feel that is remains true to throughout. Sin City, itself is a fictional town in the American west.  A major river runs through the city giving it an extensive waterfront (the docks). Run by a mobster like family called the Roarks who started the town as a place to find call girls during the gold rush. Since then a society of prostitutes run a police a section of sin city called Old Town (no relation) The Police mostly corrupt (owned by Senator Roark) are more or less along the lines of SWAT, with access to what most would consider "heavy weaponry" and full body armor. Several story lines intertwine in this installment. First is the Dame to kill for, names Ava (Eva Green).  She uses all men, but particularly her ex-lover Dwight (Josh Brolin) to get what she wants and kill who she wants. The second storyline goes on at Kadie’s bar, Marv (Mickety Roark) watches over the girls, Nancy (Jessica Alba) an exotic dancer was saved as a child from Senator Roark's son 'Yellow Bastard' by one of Sin City's few good cops named Hartigan (Bruce Willis) who, to keep her safe from the Roarks, kills himself. As a woman Nancy becomes obsessed with vindicating Hartigan. The third is a young gambler, Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who never loses until he beats one of the Roarks.  All these plot lines meld together as this gritty group struggle in Sin City for power and revenge.

Review:

If you go to this flick be sure to check your shock for violence and nudity at the door or you'll be spending a good part of the time looking at you shoes. Just sayin'.  I also cheated a little and read the Wikipedia synopsis (Sin City link in summary) so I'd hit the deck running and it really helped. Once the movie was rolling, I was pleasantly surprised at how followable the plot was even with all its twisting story lines.  I also had expected to get bored with the Noir/Colored effect but in truth is it kind of becomes another character itself. The splashes of color indicating innocents, evil and many other important moments in the story and characters.  Marv (Mickey Roarke) is probably one of the most likeable homicidal maniacs I have ever watched and boy can Nancy (Jessica Alba) "shake that thang". Although no one in Sin City is clean some are only dirty one the outside for the sake of survival while others are mean to the core. And even in the midst of all the artistic nature and comic book stylization of this experience the characters came through loud and clear and you knew exactly who you were rooting for. Better than the first 'Sin City', on a scale of 1-10, I’d to give ‘Sin City A Dame To Kill' for an 8 .
