Former Maine State Police Chief Andrew Demers, 73, of New Gloucester posted bail this morning and was released from Cumberland County Jail after being charged with unlawful sexual contact of a minor.

In a statement issued this morning, State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said the agency was "stunned and saddened" by news of the investigation being conducted by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department into allegations that Demers had unlawful sexual contact with a minor under the age of 12 for the past several months.

Demers served the Maine State Police for 26 years and retired in 1993.

We will have more information as it becomes available.
