Governor Paul LePage will deliver his annual State of the State speech tonight from a joint session of the Legislature in Augusta.

The Governor is expected to talk about his very ambitious plans to overhaul Maine's tax code and his proposed $6.3 million budget.

In the days following his speech, LePage will hit the road so that Mainers can ask questions about his budget plans. The 2 year plan has been described as a "shared sacrifice" budget.

The budget would eliminate revenue sharing among Maine's cities and towns, which could raise property taxes.  The budget would also allow towns to make up that revenue by taxing larger non-profit groups like the Jackson Laboratory.  It would also eliminate the property tax Homestead Exemption for property owners under the age of 65.

The two year budget proposal would cut Maine income taxes, reduce the corporate tax and eliminate the estate tax. It would increase Maine’s sales tax and extend it to hundreds of more goods and services.

LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett said, "“We want Mainers to understand this, we know this is complex.”

The speech will start at 7 and you can watch it live on the Maine Public Broadcasting Network.
