A 19-year-old man was killed when fire swept through his Greenville apartment building on Saturday.

Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland says the body of Stephen Richards was recovered in the rubble of the house early in the afternoon. The fire started early in the morning at the apartment house in the downtown section. Three occupants of the second apartment in the building at 56 Washington Street escaped without injury.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshal's office were at the scene Saturday but say it will be difficult to pinpoint a cause of the fire because of the extent of the damage. Excavators were brought in Saturday to help find the body and the building was flattened.
