A man driving a hearse was injured today when he fell asleep behind the wheel. Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland says the hearse overturned on I-95 in Pittsfield.

The crash was reported at 3:30 and traffic in the northbound lane was stopped briefly as rescue crews attended to the driver. The hearse, which belongs to Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home in Ellsworth, was transporting a body which remained in the vehicle until it could be transferred to another hearse.

55-year-old Michael Kelly was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries McCausland said were serious but not life-threatening.
