A Heroes' sendoff celebration is planned for Friday in Hampden for 35 Bangor-based National Guard members headed to Southwest Asia.

Brigadier General Douglas Farnham, the Adjutant General for the Maine National Guard announced this week that the members of the 120th Regional Support Group, Army National Guard will be deploying this summer. According to a media release, the soldiers will spend the next year 'managing facilities, providing administrative and logistical support for troop services, and ensuring the security of personnel and facilities on a base camp.'

The unit was last mobilized in 2006 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. At that time, the unit was known as the 240th Engineer Group.

Friday's Send-Off will provide the public a chance to honor the soldiers and wish them a safe journey. It will be held at 1:00 on Friday at the Hampden Academy Performing Arts Center, 89 Western Avenue in Hampden.
