A man is dead after an attempted home invasion in which police say the homeowner fought back.

The incident happened Saturday around 8 p.m. as Richard Duffy, 48, and his teenage son were home in the town of Rome.

Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland says Christopher Dennison, 44, of Livermore Falls is dead after being shot by Duffy after a scuffle in Duffy's living room.

Detectives say Dennison was wearing a ski mask and had brass knuckles when he broke into the mobile home, and there's no indication thus far in the investigation that indicates Duffy or Dennison knew each other.

Duffy's son was not hurt in the home invasion or subsequent fight which is now under review by the state Attorney General's office.

This home invasion in Rome on the heels of the arrest last Thursday by the Penobscot County Sheriff's Department for an armed home invasion where a woman was held at knife point, and other area robberies involving use of force.
