Tonight’s mystery artist made a hit out of a song inspired by Stevie Nick's aversion to The Eagle's Joe Walsh's advances. It was actually written for her but that she didn’t want. Think you know what the song might be or who made it a hit??

The song in question was penned by Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics after his first trip to L.A. On that trip, Stewart hung out with Stevie Nicks, who at the time was trying to dodge besotted Eagles guitarist Joe Walsh.  The  A.V. Club reports, it was to Walsh that Nicks reportedly stated the song’s legendary ‘Don’t Come Around Here No More’. So Stewart ostensibly wrote the song for her, but an unsuccessful recording session left the composition up for grabs.

The rest is of course history, Tom Petty snagged it. The song didn’t sound like a typical Petty composition, and there’s a reason for that, as there are about three or four other bands present in the song’s backstory. (Dave Stewart’s view of L.A. being equated to the “Wonderland” theme of Tom’s video, where Dave appears as the caterpillar in the legendarily trippy video for “Don’t Come Around Here,” video with Petty serving as a Mad Hatter playing mind games with an innocent Alice, further proving that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers could hold their own with other 80's MTV stars like Michael Jackson and Madonna.
