Tonight’s mystery artist has a hit song that is rumored to be about a student who leapt to her death while in college.  Any guess who he might be??

Turns out our lyricist was an impressionable teen from Gainesville, FL.

At last according to a little Wikipedia rumor about tonight's song...

"Due to the lyrics about a desperate girl on a balcony hearing "cars roll by out on 441", Tom Petty's song 'American Girl' was rumored to have been written about a college student who committed suicide by jumping from the Beaty Towers residence hall at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Beaty Towers is located on the edge of the university campus alongside U.S. Route 441 (called NW 13th Street through the city), and the residence hall opened in 1967, when Petty was still a teenager living in his hometown of Gainesville."

Side Note: Kudos to Tom Petty for being nominated last October to be inducted to the song writers hall of fame to be decided by popular vote. Tom Petty is in quite an auspicious crowd of nominees including, John Mellncamp, George Harrison, Steve Miller, Gloria Estefan, Tom T. Hall, Blondie, the Isley Brothers, Madonna, Michael McDonald, Jeff Lynne, Sly Stone and Chic. Voting closed on Dec 11, 2016 and the winners will be announced at an induction ceremony schedule for June 9th in New York City.
