Wikipedia says our deep thinker was original Styx keyboardist Dennis DeYoung while referring to the album and title track ‘Grand Illusion’ He said the had the theme of the struggle to overcome self-deluding superficiality in order to affirm one's genuine value.This theme was reflected in the lyrics of the album's title track:

The Grand Illusion was the seventh album released by Styx, released on July 7, 1977. It launched the band to stardom, spawning several other hit singles "Come Sail Away" and "Fooling Yourself", and selling over three million copies in the US.
