Tonight’s mystery band has a hit helped by an unsuspecting operator, that is two songs in one. The song tells the story of a cheating husband who by songs end finds out his wife is cheating on him too.  Any guess who he might be or which band it is??

The hit song, Young Lust-Empty Spaces comes from Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ sung by David Gilmour with background vocals by Roger Waters. Wikipedia describes ‘The Wall’ as telling the story of Pink, an embittered and alienated rock star. Pink has achieved wealth and fame, and is usually away from home due demands of his career as a touring performer. To relieve the tedium of the road, and is living a separate life from his wife however Pink is having casual sex with groupies.

At the end of the song you hear a conversation between Pink and a operator, as Pink twice attempts to place a transatlantic call to his wife. A man answers, and when the operator asks if he will accept the charges, the man simply hangs up. This is how Pink learns that his wife is cheating too.

A fun fact: The dialogue with the operator was real, to her anyway.  Co-producer James Guthrie made with a neighbor in London, while the album was being recorded in L.A. He wanted realism, for the operator to actually believe they had caught his wife having an affair, and so didn't inform her she was being recorded. The operator heard in the recording is the second operator they tried the routine with, after the first operator's reaction was deemed unsatisfactory.
