I-95 Drive Home Mystery Artist [VIDEO]
Tonight’s mystery artist credits an ad campaign using one of his songs for saving part of a company and many of the jobs of the men and women who worked there. Think you can guess the song or the artist who takes this credit??
I found this statement in a Billboard Magazine interview from November of last year. The question was posed to Bob Seger as to the effect of his peers criticizing him when "Like a Rock" was used to score a Chevy TV campaign. They added to that in today's market, artists pursue these tie-ins and wanted to know if he felt vindicated? His answer:
"Like a Rock" only hit [No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100], and when Chevy came to me and said they wanted that song, I said OK because I wanted people to hear that song. It was enormously successful. They used it for about 10 years. I didn't really want to do it that long, but they kept coming to me and saying, "This has [Michael] Jordan-esque appeal in our market testing." We saved a lot of jobs at GM."
BM asked, "Like a Rock" saved GM jobs?
"They'd lost a lot of money the year before that campaign, and the Chevy truck division was in the black the whole 10 years [that the "Like a Rock" campaign ran]. I wouldn't play the song for a long time. But now we play it."
