Tonight’s mystery artists recorded a song that Peter Wolf of J Geils calls the hit that got away.  Think you know what it is and how he lost it??

This regret was told to Rolling Stone after the passing of Tom Petty when Peter told how Tom Petty his longtime friend had offered J.Geils the tune Don’t Do Me Like That”  he said:

"One day I got this call from [producer] Jimmy Iovine’s office, confirming my address. I got this package and in it was a cassette. It was in Tom’s handwriting: “Don’t Do Me Like That.” And there was a note: “Hey, I think this would be a cool song for you. I think you and the [Geils] band can really do something with it.”

Unfortunately for J Geils, the band felt they had too much going on to record it and the rest is history.  It was Tom ‘s first big hit. Amazingly enough when Tom and Peter were friends in 1977 Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were opening act for J Geils. Oh how times change.

Here's Tom with tonight's featured song.
