Tonight’s mystery artist wanted Michael McDonald to be the lead singer in their band but it was voted down.  Can you guess the band or why it happened??

This was an interesting story from rate your music about Donald Fagen’s discomfort with being the lead singer of Steely Dan.  From the beginning he tried to find another singer for the duty but said in the end they all lacked the smirk in their voice needed to do his songs justice. Anyway in 1975 Michael McDonald joined the band as a backup singer and keyboardist and he apparently could give the smirk because Fagen pushed to have him take over the lead vocal role.  He was eventually voted down.

Here is tonight's featured song with David Palmer doing vocals instead of Donald Fagen.

Here is Michael with the band many years later. Can you hear a smirk?
