It was built back in 1958 and It's the only way to get from Jonesport to Beals Island, unless you have a boat.

Yesterday, U.S. Senator Susan Collins announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation will award $10,525,000 in federal funding toward the replacement of the Beals Island Bridge!

"This important funding will allow the Maine Department of Transportation to move forward in replacing the bridge, improving public safety, increasing connectivity between the island and the mainland, and helping to create jobs in rural Maine,” Senator Collins said in a recent press release.

Just like when the Penobscot Narrows Bridge was made, the new Beals Island Bridge will be constructed right next to the old one, according to a post on MPBN's site

Construction on the new bridge is expected to begin this coming February and finish sometime in early 2019.  The State and the Feds will kick in even more cash to reach the total cost of $19.4 million.
