Former Maine Gov. Angus King was elected to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, winning 53 percent of the vote and easily outpacing his two major rivals, Republican Charlie Summers and Democrat Cynthia Dill.

With more than 70 percent of precincts reporting, Summers, Maine's Secretary of State, had 30 percent of the vote and Dill, a state senator from Cape Elizabeth, had 13 percent, according to unofficial results compiled by the Bangor Daily News.

King will replace Republican Olympia Snowe, who opted not to seek reelection.

Democratic incumbents Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree on Tuesday also won reelection to to their seats in the House of Representatives.
